Reporter:

As I know, the community of Vietnamese in Czech is fairly large (about 60,000 people), so on festivals, especially on Tet festival, what activities do Vietnamese often organize to keep the traditional customs and the beautiful cultures of Vietnam?

Ms. Phuong Thao:

Whenever Tet comes, we have feelings of missing our homeland where there are always be-loved relatives expecting us coming home for reunion in the Lunar New Year. To appease the nostalgia, to keep the beauty of traditional cultures of Vietnamese and to make children of the 2nd generation remember their origins, annually Vietnamese community organize activities to welcome the Lunar New Year in very spectacular way. In the atmosphere of spring, we also have fresh peach blossoms and traditional dishes like in Vietnam, such as: Chung cakes, pickled onion, spring rolls,... All of these are made by the skillful hands of Vietnamese women here. In addition, we also organize cultural exchange program between Vietnamese community in Czech and Czechs people with traditional cultures, such as: lion dance, dance with conical hats, dance with hand fans, Vietnamese bamboo dance; Quan ho folk songs, folk games of Tet, ...

Ms. Phuong Thao:

Most of the second generation children were born and raised in the Czech Republic. These children attend school and speak Czechs language. Therefore, at home, we teach them Vietnamese and ask them to use their mother tongue - Vietnamese. Currently in several cities in the Czech Republic, there are Vietnamese language classes for Vietnamese children. With formal curriculums, good teachers, these children can read, write Vietnamese fluently and even sing Vietnamese songs very well.
