Vietnam and Laos has a special friendship that has been established and developed by the Party, State, and people of the two countries through generations. Strengthening this tradition, in recent years, the community of Vietnamese people and enterprises in Oudomxay province of Laos has carried out practical activities to promote investment and trade, ensure social security in order to expand the special relationship.
In Oudomxay, a central province of the North of Laos, there are more than 1,200 Laotian of Vietnamese origin and Vietnamese people living and trading. In the last years, the community of Vietnamese has always promoted their essence of hardworking, active, and creative in production and trade. Many enterprises of Vietnamese people there have become the key economic units of Oudomxay with revenue of tens of million dollars contributing tens of billions kip to the provincial budget. The number of projects and investment capital has further increased and created job for hundreds of local people. There, the efficiency of many fields and potentials of Vietnamese enterprises have promoted such as mineral importing – exporting, exploiting and processing, infrastructure constructing, agricultural – forestry product making and processing…

Among successful businessmen in Oudomxay, Mr. Phi Van Mai from Vinh Phuc province is one typical. He has become the pride of Vietnamese community there. At present, he is the Vice Chairman of Vietnamese enterprises association in Laos, member of the executive committee of Vietnamese association in Laos, Chairman of Vietnamese people in Oudomxay. The enterprise - Somphaxong cooperative venture company, owned by Mr. Mai has become one of the leading companies in the North of Laos. This enterprise focuses on many sectors of building, import – export, hotels,… creating job for hundreds of local people with stable salary. As the Chairman of Vietnamese association in Oudomxay, yearly, he calls for and mobilizes Viet kieu and their business to support poor Laotian people there and organize activities towards their country.
Mrs. Dao Hai Yen (from Thuong Trung commune, Vinh Tuong district) is also a successful businesswoman having much contribution to Oudomxay. In 1998, to improve the family’s economic conditions, Mrs. Yen and her husband decided to move to Laos. Initially, they only had a small shop selling sweetie and refreshments. After 18 years, they became the owner of a company specializing in importing – exporting agricultural products and building materials. Phu Tho import – export company established by them is one of the first enterprises bringing ad guiding farmers of Oudomxay to plant hybrid corn.

Sharing about activities of Vietnamese community in Oudomxay, Ms, Yen said, “Not only paying attention to production and trade, the association of Vietnamese people in Oudomxay also organizes many social activities highly appreciated and welcomed by the local authority as providing corn seed, training on agricultural production, subscribing people in flooding area… Besides, we often visit and contribute capital to help difficult households; simultaneously, obey policies and regulations of Laos Party and State.”
It is said that by practical actions, the community of Vietnamese people in Oudomxay in general and each Vietnamese in Oudomxay in particular always make great efforts to build a united collective in order to continue to maintain and promote the special friendship of Vietnam – Laos in general, Vinh Phuc – Oudomxay in particular.
